Parent Visa Overview

Australia's parent visa program allows Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens to sponsor their parents to live in Australia permanently. Parent visas are among the most heavily oversubscribed visa categories — queue times can be very long, and the financial costs are significant. Choosing the right pathway from the outset matters enormously.

The Balance of Family Test

To be eligible for most parent visas, the applicant must pass the balance of family test. This means that more of their children live in Australia as citizens or permanent residents than in any other single country. Our agents assess whether you meet this requirement and advise on the implications.

Assurance of Support

The sponsoring child must sign an Assurance of Support, committing to covering any social security payments claimed by the parent over a set period. A bond is also required for contributory parent visas. These are significant financial commitments that must be understood before applying.

Queue reality check

The non-contributory Parent Visa (103) currently has a queue exceeding 30 years. For most families, the Contributory pathway (143/173) is the only realistic option for parents to settle in Australia within a reasonable timeframe.
